Biography
DARREN NELSEN is a composer, guitarist, arranger, bandleader, improviser, and sound artist in the Atlanta area. His influences include Frank Zappa, Charles Ives, Andy Summers, Vernon Reid, Dweezil Zappa, Jennifer Batten, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and a multitude of other guitarists and contemporary classical composers.
His current projects include:
- Live loop-based solo guitar improvisations
- Composer, arranger, and bandleader for Gravity Machine, a jazz-rock fusion trio
- Guitarist for Police Academy, the Southeast's premiere Police/Sting tribute band
As a composer, Darren's work has been commissioned and performed by the Iolani School in Hawaii, the New York Miniaturist Ensemble, and the Atlanta Composers Group.
Darren founded the Atlanta Composers Blog (2006) and Atlanta Composers Meetup (2007) and was curator of the Atlanta Composers Electronic Music concert series from 2007-2008.
He has spoken on topics of music and technology at Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Art Institute of Atlanta, and Roswell High School.
Darren is married to artist, author, and color expert Margie Deeb. They have a Catahoula Leopard Dog named Marley.
